Sustainable Stewardship For Generations To Come

Water Stewardship

Water is at the very core of sustainable development because we must ensure the systems that store, filter and transport clean water are protected and preserved.

Alliance for Water Stewardship

AWS is a global collaboration of member businesses, non-governmental organizations and public sector groups, which is committed to helping to conserve local water resources through the adoption and promotion of a universal framework for the sustainable use of water .

Long Term
Monitoring

BlueTriton Brands has one of the most comprehensive datasets in Canada. There are numerous monitoring points surrounding all our water sources in Ontario and BC. These monitoring points monitor groundwater levels, surface water elevations, wetlands, ecological habitats, and wildlife.

Water Stewardship Projects

We are proud to partner with many great organizations including Friends of Mill Creek program as well as the University of Guelph that work to study and protect our local water resources.

We are committed to the sustainable use of water in the communities where we live and operate including our Hope BC facility in Canada, which was the first Canadian AWS Certified facility.

To demonstrate a deeper level of engagement and achievement in water stewardship that is needed to help preserve and protect freshwater ecosystems, we have committed by 2025 to certify all of our sites globally under the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard. The AWS Standard is the first, comprehensive, global standard for measuring responsible water stewardship across social, cultural, environmental and economic criteria. As of December 2021, 16 of our facilities in the U.S. have been certified under the AWS Standard.

Sustainable Packaging

Our sustainable packaging initiatives include investments in bio-based materials with Danimer Scientific, and biological recycling efforts with Loop Industries and Cabrios and Bottle Alliance.

REDESIGN
The sustainability of our products isn’t an afterthought when it comes to design. It’s something we embed in every stage of our product development.

RECYCLE
We are doing what we can to encourage and inspire consumers to recycle more and invest in infrastructure to make it easier for them to recycle.

REPURPOSE
BlueTriton Brands invests in Startup Timeplast to Explore Alternative Packaging Technologies.

REUSE
We are beginning to incorporate rPET into some of our brands. In the future, we hope all bottles are recycled and captured for reuse.

Recycling Initiatives

While the average of the recovery rates for beverage containers in Canada is approximately 75%, we all need to do more to make sure ALL beverage containers are recycled. PET is the second most valuable item in the Blue Box program in Ontario and the more the product is captured, the more it can be reused repeatedly. In Ontario, stewards, such as BlueTriton pay 50% of the cost of the municipal blue box programs. This will increase with the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility program where producers will cover 100% of the cost of the blue box program. We support the EPR program and the additional costs as it promises to help increase the recycling rates in Ontario.

Through our industry association, the Canadian Beverage Association, we aim to advance recycling policies so that we can capture and reuse as many PET beverage containers as possible, and to educate our consumers about the impact they can make by recycling, and preventing valuable plastic materials from being discarded.

In addition, we work with industry partners to improve and enhance recycling programs across the country. We are actively participating in discussions on plastics, packaging, and recycling with government and industry to move towards a circular economy.

Puslinch Public Spaces Recycling Program

We are proud to have launched an innovative public-spaces recycling program in Puslinch in 2020, marked by bright blue and black dual-recycling bins in outdoor locations across the township.

The program, designed by Reclay StewardEdge and Recycle Everywhere, and funded by us, provided much-needed infrastructure to improve recycling rates and reduce waste throughout the community.

We are happy to see that this effective recycling infrastructure have a forever home in Puslinch!

The township of Puslinch approved the $50,000 in early February. Bins were originally slated to be placed in mid-April, but were delayed out of an abundance of caution to protect the health and safety of the Public Works, Parks, and Facilities teams during the pandemic.

Erin Public Spaces Recycling Program

One of our most recent partnerships with fellow industry partners was for a public spaces recycling program in Erin.

After the new bins were put in place, a post waste audit was conducted and found that the recovery of beverage containers increased to 87% and contamination was reduced by 17 points.

We all have a role to play when it comes to the circular economy. Please ensure you recycle your beverage bottles
